‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’ is carving its path through the record books at a record pace. The blockbuster of the summer, and more than likely the biggest movie of 2012, crossed the $1 billion barrier on Sunday. The Potter finale accomplished the treasured feat in 19 days, which ties ‘Avatar’s’ pace. The $1.008 billion worldwide gross ranks 8th all-time, passing ‘The Dark Knight’. BoxOfficeMojo projects that ‘Part 2’ could be on pace to take 3rd place away from ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ ($1.12 billion) as early as next weekend.
The question now, is whether or not Harry can keep pace with the Blue Aliens? Even though both films were 3D movies, and were shown in IMAX theaters, ‘Avatar’ did have the advantage of being re-released. While Potter’s torrential pace is seriously impressive, I don’t see it having the perseverance to claim the ultimate crown.
